Signing of the Memorandum of Understanding to establish a Joint Commission in the field of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

On Wednesday 20 October 2021, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the British Ambassador signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a Joint Commission in the field of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

The Joint Commission aims to consolidate higher education and scientific research between Algeria and the United Kingdom to reach the objectives set by the Governments of the two countries to promote bilateral cooperation in this field. It aims mainly to increase opportunities for Algerian students to learn and practice the English language and for British students to travel to Algeria to learn the Algerian culture and Arabic language; thereby, increasing students’ mobility and academic exchange visits between the two countries. Collaboration in quality assurance of higher education will allow the two countries, in the first instance, to benefit together from quality development and improvement of the quality of teaching. Subsequently, it will facilitate access to UK teaching and qualifications in Algeria through course accreditation, joint teaching and the establishment of UK Academic institutions in Algeria. And finally, to increase research collaboration between Algerian and British higher education institutions to address key national and global challenges.

The Joint Commission is composed of members selected amongst government representatives and academic and business communities and companies from the two countries and includes three sub-committees: one for Mobility and Knowledge Exchange, one for Educational Development and one for Scientific Research and Employability.

Over the course of the coming months, the British Council will be working closely with the Directorate of International Cooperation and University Exchanges to develop the actions needed to start implementation on the ground.
