" The Discretion", an exceptional performance that blends words, live music, and visual storytelling to bring to life the powerful themes of independence and exile explored in Faiza Guene’s novel. This captivating production offers an innovative way to engage with literature, making it accessible and impactful for diverse audiences.
Since its inception in October 2021, the project has flourished through the collaboration of partners from the UK, Algeria, and France. The UK-based Good Chance Theatre produced the world première at the Edinburgh International Book Festival in 2022, commemorating the 60th anniversary of Algerian independence. May 2024, the performance came to Algeria with three shows in Algiers, Tizi Ouzou, and Oran.
A New Approach to Literature
The heart of "La Discretion" lies in its innovative, ‘pop-up’ style, which evolves as it travels. Audiences in Algeria experienced the performance in a mix of Arabic, French, and Tamazight, reflecting the project's adaptability and its commitment to celebrating linguistic and cultural diversity.
Locally coordinated by the Algerian Agency for Cultural Outreach, this iteration continues to push boundaries, reimagining how literature can be presented and experienced.
This production showcases the power of international collaboration and the shared human experience, transcending borders through art. It is a testament to how culture can connect us all, and how performances like "The Discretion" serve as a bridge between languages, identities, and nations.
