Building capacity in English in Algerian universities
In January 2014, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the UK Government agreed to send 500 Algerian Government funded PhD scholars in English to UK universities over the next five years.
This is part of an ambitious Algerian plan to partner with the UK to build capacity in English in universities and to diversify its international partnerships into the Anglophone world.
British Council Algeria is facilitating the placement of 69 Algerian PhD candidates in English literature, linguistics and language teaching in UK universities in 2014/15.
In March 2014 we arranged the first major visit in decades by 15 Algerian academics and the Ministry of Higher Education to UK universities. This included a workshop with 20 UK universities to discuss how to operationalise the programme.
In May 2014, UK and Algerian academics led a preparatory workshop in Algiers for the selected candidates on how to apply and develop a research proposal for study in the UK in 2014/15.
All PhD scholars are selected by the Algerian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research through an annual competition.
